Chambal was a long overdue trip for us. I had always wanted to visit the river and its adjoining ravines and a trip finally materialized in December 2010.
We were well assisted by RP Singh who owns and runs Chambal Safari Lodge -- a lovely camp near the ravines and a perfect vantage to access the area. Plus, the camp itself offers fabulous birding in and around campus.
The main targets in Chambal were two endangered animals -- the Indian Skimmer, an enigmatic tern-like bird and the Gangetic Gharial, a long-snouted fresh water crocodile. Of course, there is lots more of wildlife to be seen on the Chambal in addition to the above two species.
The lodge has great guides it becomes easy and flexible to plan target species. The lodge operates boats on the river and the skilled boatmen make wildlife viewing pleasurable. This landscape and the lodge is a must visit for any wildlife enthusiast.
