Wildventures

Welcome to wildventures.com!

This is a gallery of images from wild India. This is a travel website that focuses on travel to wild places in the Indian subcontinent to get visitors to understand/appreciate the immense biodiversity India represents. Sadly and not very surprisingly, India's biodiversity is disappearing at a rapid rate because of economic growth, habitat destruction, over-population pressures, pollution, rampant poaching....the list is endless.

It is my belief that responsible and sustainable travel to these natural areas - ecotourism - fosters better environmental understanding, appreciation, and eventually, aids in conservation. India offers fantastic opportunities for sustainable travel to these natural areas - from the high Himalaya down to the plains, jungle, swamp & desert. Additionally, photography as a tool provides an opportunity to drive education around critical conservation issues affecting India's habitats and wildlife. This site aims to leverage these two powerful tools.

These images have been made over the last few years in various parts of India (and some made elsewhere during business travel) and have been organized as trip reports arranged in reverse chronological order. Each trip report has an album of images. Please select from the list of trip reports (thumbnails) below or from the list on the left. You also have the option of selecting on keywords or tags. All images have been made with Canon Digital SLR and Canon Telephoto (400mm/f4 DO, 500mm/f4, 800mm/f5.6) lenses.

I also shoot with a Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera. However, since most of these Leica images are non-wildlife, I have hosted them in a separate gallery. Some of the scapes, however, appear on these trip reports.

My inspiration & energies come from a bunch of great (& highly unconventional) nature photographers who have taken Indian nature photography to an entirely different plane by leveraging the power of the digital medium and the internet. Most of them are Bangalore based -- Vijay Cavale (the brain behind the pioneering India Nature Pixs & India Nature Watch), Sudhir Shivaram (the classy portrait specialist), Kalyan Varma (geek turned wildlife pro-photographer), Clement Francis (the master of bird behavior) and, not the least, Kolkata-based Sumit K. Sen (the king of the East). Check out the stunning images on their websites!

Enjoy the images & feel free to share your comments!
